VuuPaper

A lightweight wallpaper manager and setter for X11

VuuPaper is a simple, fast, and efficient wallpaper manager inspired by Nitrogen.
Built with C and GTK3, it uses the excellent xwallpaper as the backend.
The binary is tiny — under 40 KB — making it perfect for minimal setups, Openbox, or any lightweight window manager.

Features

  • Clean, intuitive interface similar to Nitrogen
  • Multi-monitor support:
    • Apply the same wallpaper to all monitors
    • Span one image across all monitors
    • Set different wallpapers per individual monitor
  • Multiple wallpaper folders — easily add and switch between directories
  • Style options: Zoom, Center, Maximize, Tile, etc.
  • Custom background color picker
  • Info bar showing the full path of the currently applied wallpaper (updates per monitor)
  • --restore support for autostart
  • Thumbnail browser for quick wallpaper selection

Compiling

gcc -o vuupaper vuupaper.c `pkg-config --cflags --libs gtk+-3.0` -Wall -O2

Dependencies: gtk3 and xwallpaper

First Run & Usage

  1. On first launch, VuuPaper opens a dialog with quick instructions and a Choose Directory button.
  2. Select your default wallpaper folder — thumbnails will load automatically.
  3. Use the Add Folder button to include more directories.
  4. Select a folder from the dropdown, choose a wallpaper, pick a style, and optionally set a background color.
  5. Use the monitor selector (top right) to choose All Monitors, Span, or a specific display.
  6. Click Apply.

The info bar at the top always shows the current wallpaper path.
Switching monitors updates it accordingly when different wallpapers are used.

Restoring Wallpapers After Reboot

Add this to your autostart file (e.g. ~/.config/openbox/autostart):

vuupaper --restore &

Consult your window manager / desktop environment documentation for the correct autostart location.

Notes

This is the 2nd public version. Version 1.0-1, stable and very usable, but may still contain minor bugs. Feedback and contributions are welcome!
