gtk2-ng-test-scripts
Scripts used in gtk2-ng test iso, to build locally and run apps against it. These are built for a special Vuu-do test iso to be released later for some general unified testing of gtk2-ng on a common base using different hardware. They can be used by a user on their own system but you must remember to install all of the build-depends for the updater script to work. I'll also be making a standalone .deb package for it.
Test iso now available : https://sourceforge.net/projects/vuu-do/files/Vuu-do-5.03/5.03-gtk2ng-testing/
To use standalone:
-
Install build dependencies listed for gtk2-ng:
sudo (or su) apt-get install build-essential git libcups2-dev yad
autoconf automake libtool pkg-config gtk-doc-tools gobject-introspection
libglib2.0-dev libpango1.0-dev libatk1.0-dev libcairo2-dev libgdk-pixbuf-2.0-dev
libfontconfig1-dev libfreetype-dev libharfbuzz-dev libfribidi-dev libpng-dev
libx11-dev libxext-dev libxrender-dev libxrandr-dev libxcursor-dev
libxinerama-dev libxi-dev libxfixes-dev libxcomposite-dev libxdamage-dev
libcups2-dev gettext autopoint -
Copy the two scripts and the two .desktops to your text-editor and save/name the files as displayed here. Make the scripts executable and put them in your $PATH (I use /usr/local/bin, you'll need to be root for that). You can drop the .desktops in /usr/share/applications or ~/.local/share/applications.
-
Use the "Update gtk2-ng" menu entry to run the update-gtkng.sh script. Let it run, it may take a while on older hardware, it's a lot of data, takes about 30 minutes on my old machine.
-
Test apps using the "Run with gtk-ng" menu entry.
From the README.txt on the iso:
A local git repo has been created and the gtk2-ng repo cloned and residing in the user's home folder (/home/vuudo/GIT/gtk2-ng), and it has been compiled and that folder is also in the user's home (/home/vuudo/gtk2-ng-test). This allows for testing side-by-side with the system version of the libraries easily.
To test an app using the gtk2-ng libraries, just open the menu and at the top i've placed launchers for it ("Run with gtk2-ng") and the update script ("Update gtk2-ng"). There are also icons/launchers for both in the panel down to the left. Click to launch the run script and a simple dialog opens up where you enter the name of the app you want to try, this will prepend it with the proper exports to run the app against the test libraries and it will open. Note that if you try it with a gtk3 app it won't hurt anything and it will still open the app, just won't be gtk2 you're looking at!
To update to the latest version of gtk2-ng, use the "Update gtk2-ng" entry, this will start a script that downloads the latest version from the offical repo, and builds it for you, overwriting /home/vuudo/gtk2-ng-test with your updated version. On older hardware this can take some time, about 30 minutes on my 14-year-old dual-core machine, better machines it might be only 5-10 minutes. There is a progress dialog letting you know it's working and where in the process it's at.
To add new themes to test, first install your theme normally, then go to /usr/share/themes and copy/paste your new theme to /home/vuudo/gtk2-ng-test/share/themes. You don't need anything but the gtk2.0 folder and whatever is in it for the test, so you can delete the gtk3 and other things from it after copying it to themes. Check that folder for examples vs. what's in system themes to see what's been removed.
Switching to "testing" branch
The standalone scripts use the "master" branch, if you'd like to switch to the
"testing" branch to help test proposed changes, it's simple. Note that these instructions
were written for the test iso, so if you installed just the scripts on your own system then
use whatever method you would normally use to edit a root-owned file.
EDIT: The new test-iso will be using the "testing" branch by default but you can switch
back-and-forth easily to suit by using the instructions below:
-
Boot it up (if using the test iso, live-session is fine), open file-manager and navigate to /usr/local/bin
-
Find update-gtk2-ng.sh, right-click on it and choose "Edit file as root"
-
Password prompt will open, enter the root password which is simply "root"
-
It will open in Pluma, scroll down to line #37
-
Replace this line (clones from the "master" branch):
git clone https://git.devuan.org/Daemonratte/gtk2-ng.git . || echo "ERROR: git clone failed"With this line (clones from "testing"):
git clone -b testing https://git.devuan.org/Daemonratte/gtk2-ng.git . || echo "ERROR: git clone failed" -
Save the file, then close the text editor and file-manager
-
Open the menu and at the top hit the "Update gtk2-ng" button and run it. Let it run, may take a while.
-
When done the "Run with gtk2-ng" button will now use the testing branch.
To switch back just revert to the older git clone command and run it again.
